General Tips for Surfers on Lolland

All surf spots on Lolland share one thing in common: they are usually uncrowded, offering plenty of space on the water – a true natural experience. However, this also presents challenges, especially for kitesurfers, as there is often no one around to assist with launching or landing. For this reason, it's advisable to always bring a companion, even if they aren't necessarily into water sports. It's also important for safety reasons to have someone watching your session who can call for help in case of an emergency.

Below, you'll find a selection of the best surf spots on Lolland, categorized into flat water and beginner-friendly spots, as well as advanced spots for those specializing in waves and foiling. If you have any questions about surfing on Lolland, feel free to contact us anytime!

Flat Water / Beginner-Friendly Spots

If you're looking for a safe, shallow water area to practice or simply want to enjoy a session in flat water, we recommend the following spots:

1. Hestehovedet Beach (NW - SW)

  • Best Wind Directions: NW, W, SW

  • Type: Shallow water, flat with small waves

  • Facilities: Parking directly at the spot, surf school, restaurant, snack bar, kiosk, children's playground, picnic areas, sauna, campsite, and motorhome parking

  • Coordinates: 54.833025, 11.089245

Description:

Hestehovedet Beach is located in Nakskov Fjord and is a perfect spot for both beginners and advanced surfers. The sandy bottom and shallow water make this location ideal for kitesurfing and windsurfing. Besides a watersport school the spot offers excellent facilities, making it attractive for families as well. The water sports area is situated on the northern side of the bathing pier, where you can also set up your equipment – the southern side is reserved for bathers.

Fun Fact: At the end of the long bathing pier, there is a small sauna, for which you can purchase tickets at the nearby campsite.

2. Albuen Lagoon (N - S)

  • Best Wind Directions: N, NW, W, SW, S

  • Type: Flat water, beginner-friendly

  • Facilities: Parking directly at the spot, public restroom 100 meters from the parking area, campsite within a 5-minute walk

  • Coordinates: 54.794930, 10.977772

Description:

At the western end of Lolland lies the Albuen Lagoon, a true natural paradise. With its seemingly endless flat water, the lagoon is a perfect spot for beginners. However, during strong winds, water can be pushed out of the lagoon, causing the entry area to become partially dry. You can stay overnight at the nearby Albuen Strand Camping, as overnight camping directly at the spot is prohibited for nature conservation reasons.

Important: Surfers should only enter the lagoon from the dyke side to protect the sensitive reed fields. In general, the Albuen Lagoon is a Natura 2000 conservation area, which means that water sports enthusiasts have a special responsibility towards nature here. From October to March, the lagoon is closed to protect the birdlife.

3. Ravnsby Bakker (E, NE, N)

  • Best Wind Directions: NE, E, SE

  • Type: Flat water - small waves

  • Facilities: Parking directly at the spot

  • Coordinates: 54.895747, 11.363152

Description:

Ravnsby Bakker / Beach is another spot with a large shallow area. The entry is gradual, and the water remains shallow up to about 200 meters from the shore. Depending on the season, the beach can be covered with dead seaweed and is generally not very large. Therefore, it is advisable to set up your equipment on the grassy area in the parking lot. There are a few stones near the shore, but the entire bay features a sandy bottom.

4. Holten Beach / Vantore (SE - SW)

  • Best Wind Directions: SE, S, SW

  • Type: Flat water to small waves

  • Facilities: Parking directly at the spot, public restroom, camping area, and shelter spots

  • Coordinates: 54.644720, 11.796146

Description:

Holten Beach, also known as "Vantore," is located in an idyllic setting near Nysted in southeastern Lolland. The spot offers a shallow area about 100 meters from the shore when the wind is coming from the south. Further out, the water gets deep, which means that the shallow area becomes quite small under side and side-onshore conditions. However, due to the water depth further out, this spot is also interesting for (wing) foilers.

One downside is the very small area at the shore, which does not provide much space for launching kites. Additionally, entry into the water is over a stone dyke. Therefore, it is advisable for kitesurfers to carry their equipment from the parking area to the water after setting up and to launch from there.
